Another very sunny day in Cape Town (around 18 degrees), so the perfect opportunity to go on a safari!
In the Cape Town area you have quiet a few reserves, each claiming they have the BIG 5.
We choose the Fairy Glen reserve as they allowed children.
It was a beautiful day all around. The drive from Parrow (area in Cape Town where we stay) to Worchester was impressive with huge mountains with snowy tops and even some wildlife beside the highway (monkeys). The game reserve was idyllically located surrounded with mountains. The drive took 4 hours and we did see a lot of game, actually we saw all the big 5 animals, except the leopard of course. In all our game drives which we did over the last couple of years, we have never been so lucky as to see one in real life.
Even though the safari today can not be compared with the ones in Kenia or Tanzania, it had its charm. The ranger was great, he has lots of information about the animals and their habbits and the landscape gave its own twist to the adventure drive: seeing a giraf walking through a valley enclosed with snowy mountains is something we had never seen before. In addition, the enthousiasm of Miro made us feel sometimes like we experienced it as well for the first time.
At 6 the sun sets here in the Western Cape and when she does, temperatures drop immediately. When that happens, you need a tick coat (*), a hat and if you have them: gloves! At that time the safari ended with a last exiting feature: feeding the lions. I can tell you, even if they were enclosed, they were mean and dangerous looking. Even from behind his wired fence, the male lion charged a few times and it was very very scary…
It was a perfect day, a perfect closure to our family of 3… We are ready for tomorrow… (we think… J )
(*) Once on South African soil, I quickly realized that with all the to do lists I made, I had forgotten one: the one for myself! Up till now I seem to have forgotten only one thing and that is my coat! And believe me when I tell you that you definitely need one here when the sun sets! So, one of the first things we bought was a nice warm jacket for me… and I have already put is several times to good use…
